Under the Radar: Featured Artists

Michelle Handelman

Michelle Handelman is a filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist whose work looks at the relationship between the forbidden and the sublime from a queer feminist perspective. Her background is a study in opposites--raised during the late 60s/early 70s, Handelman split her time between Chicago, where her mother was a fixture in the art world, and Los Angeles, where her father was a player in the counterculture sex industry. Over the years, Handelman has voraciously traversed both these worlds, developing a body of work that investigates ways of looking at the forbidden and revealing dark, subconscious layers of outsider agency. Handelman is a Guggenheim Fellow and recipient of several grants including Art Matters, Creative Capital MAP fund, and New York Foundation of The Arts.

Ray Smith

Ray Smith was born in Brownsville, TX, and grew up in Central Mexico. Since the 1980s, Smith has been pursuing an inclusive, collaborative approach to art-making by producing exuberant paintings and sculptures characterized by a blend of magical realism, Surrealism, and Modernism. His inimitable style and subject matter reflects his bi-cultural American and Mexican heritage, his early studies of fresco painting with traditional practitioners in Mexico, and an indebtedness to Picasso, the Surrealists, and the politically daring Mexican muralists. Contorted and morphed human figures recur throughout his work, as do images of dogs and other anthropomorphized animals and fantastical, part-human, part-animal hybrid beasts.  In the past two decades, Smith has participated in over 50 exhibitions worldwide. He currently splits his time between New York and Cuernavaca Mexico.

Marc Dennis

Marc_Dennis_ And She Was.jpg

Marc Dennis is an American artist known for his hyper-realistic and strikingly detailed paintings of subtly staged and slightly voyeuristic images of contemporary American culture. Interested in the transformative possibilities of familiar iconic images and visual tropes, Dennis explores the charged subjects of beauty and pleasure. Born in Danvers, Massachusetts, Dennis received his B.F.A. from Tyler School of Art of Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and his M.F.A. from The University of Texas at Austin. In addition to being an artist, Dennis is also a full time tenured part-time professor of art at Elmira College where he teaches a very unique off-campus course based in New York City, called "Project Dumbo," where select students live and work for one month together in a loft in Brooklyn.
