The work explores aspects of material culture through still lives, site-specific installations, and photographs. The hand-sculpted glass compositions are portraits of individuals and societal through inanimate objects. Every object created, whether broken, “flawed,” or “perfect” is incorporated into the final composition, literally capturing a moment in time. The process of creating defines the final composition; mimesis is abandoned. Mortality, consumerism, materiality, and temporality, critical issues since the inception of the still life tradition in the 17th century, continue to be relevant.

While most photography employs a lens, and either film or a digital sensor, this series explores ways of generating images on photographic paper without using a camera or negative. The source of inspiration for inventing processes that inform the resulting photograph is the dialogue that occurs between painters or sculptors, and their chosen medium. Another is the scientific method, where one observes phenomena, formulate a hypothesis, test it with experiments, use careful measurements, note variables, observe results, and use this information to build an image.

While still working with photo paper, light, and chemistry, a revisit to some historic processes like Man Ray’s photogram, Pierre Cordier’s chemigram, and lumen printing, and also invent other ways of producing images without using a negative. These processes are utilizing optical situations, or chemical reactions, or a combination of the two.

Andreas Savva

A refugee since childhood, his practice is defined by his social and political views that are often imbued with skepticism in relation to capitalistic societal values. His in-situ installations or units as he defines them are categorized by a different set of dominant materials ranging from rope (series Opportunist (1993- ) to money bills as main material (1995-) with the series ¥€$ using the symbols of the three most powerful currencies at the turn of the millennium. More recently, Savva has developed a body of painting with extremely smooth surfaces in response to the vast but infertile information emanating from the pervasive use of the flat screen of the Internet.

The paintings navigate the use of geometric abstraction in the construction of imaginary environments. The complexity of each individual painting, with their virtual orbs, mirrors the macro and micro layers of a fractal geometric space. This combined effect creates a 3-dimensional quality on a 2-dimensional surface. With confident brushwork and the orchestration of layered forms they playfully challenge the viewer with a host of visual surprises - splashes of vibrant color, chaotic shapes, using traditional and non-traditional materials synergized to invigorate geometric space.
